In a significant change for the German trade fair industry, the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry (AUMA) has officially adopted new emission measurement guidelines based on the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) methodology to promote sustainability and climate action in the trade fair industry. AUMA is the first national industry association to align itself with this internationally recognized framework, demonstrating its strong commitment to sustainability and climate action in the events sector.
The “Net Zero Events” initiative was launched during the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow to help the global events industry achieve net zero carbon emissions. The framework provides a unified approach to measuring and reporting emissions and a roadmap for reducing them, encouraging collaboration between event organizers, venues, service providers and stakeholders to share best practices and track progress towards environmental goals.
AUMA has adapted and customized the NZCE methodology specifically to the characteristics of the German trade fair industry, developing guidelines that are applicable to the German trade fair industry. As the German trade fair industry is one of the most active and influential in the world, the guide aims to ensure consistency and transparency in emissions reporting for all trade fair organizations in Germany. By introducing standardized parameters and data collection methods, it enables fair and comparable measurements across events and venues.
The main objective of the guide is to provide a solid foundation for environmental responsibility and to facilitate the development of effective carbon reduction strategies. It covers key emission sources including energy consumption, travel, accommodation, logistics, catering and waste management. With harmonized measurement practices, show organizers can identify high-emission areas and implement targeted solutions.
In addition, this initiative is aligned with broader European and international climate goals, including the EU Green Deal and the Paris Agreement.AUMA's proactive approach sets an example for industry associations around the world, proving that industry-wide cooperation and a standardized approach are vital in the fight against climate change.
By adopting the NZCE framework, AUMA is not only consolidating its leadership position in the global trade fair industry, but also contributing to a sustainable future for events.
